Hydrophone Power Amplifier PA1001

Power amplifier to drive an underwater speaker combined with a high input impedance hydrophone amplifier in a suitcase with built-in batteries.

The amplifier is designed to drive an underwater piezoceramic speaker like the Reson type TC2130 or eq. or passive hydrophones like the TC4033 or TC4034

The power section of this amplifier is capable of driving 50volt peak to peak output signal up to 300 kHz in a capacitive load of 10nF maximum with a characteristic impedance of 100 ohm. The amplifier also contains a high impedance hydrophone input amplifier and an envelope or "click" detector for monitoring and recording or listening.

A maximum of 90 dB of gain is obtainable when coupling the input preamplifier and the power output section together in a row forming a single high performance amplifier with a very low noise level. The dynamic range of 120 dB for this amplifier provides the ability to handle as low as 1 micovolt of signal voltage level.

Although the two separate amplifier sections are placed in the same box it is also possible to use them separately so as there can be transmitted signals through the power section while listening and/or recording from the receiving pre-amplifier section simultaneously.

The two amplifier sections thus may be used both separately as a transmitter and a receiver or coupled together in a row forming a single amplifier with very high gain.
This is especially useful when listening for distant and weak signals.

PA1001PC – the PeliCase version

The amplifier comes in a waterproof suitcase with 4pcs.12volt batteries
Operating time is appr.12hours on a range of fully charged batteries
This is a stand alone amplifier unit with a power amplifier and a hydrophone receiver amplifier complete with built-in envelope or "click" detector with batteries and charger included all in a waterproof suitcase

This amplifier is also available as a 19 inch rack version

Description of the terminals and control buttons
High impedance preamplifier input : Suitable for piezoceramic transducers like the Reson type TC4033 or eq. See also www.RESON.com

Alternative Charge amplifier input:
- Used for passive hydrophones
- Input impedance is 1Giga ohm + 1nF
- Suited for any passive hydrophone with long cables and BNC connector
- Input gain is equal to the transducer capacitance divided by 1nF
- Gain dB = 20*LOG (transducer_Capacitance / input_Capacitance)

Balanced input : with build-in 48Volt phantom power supply.
Designed for connection of standard studio microphones with 3pole XLR connectors.
It will drive DPA microphones Series 4000 studio microphones as well as their 8011 hydrophone. This input may also be used as a single-sided non balanced input.
XLR pin1: GND=0V
XLR pin2: Positive input
XLR pin3: Negative input

Input amplifier and Gain selector:
Used to switch between the tree different input amplifiers.
Gain is privided here only with the preamplifier selection.
Bandwidth : 10Hz to 1MHz (700KHz @ 30dB gain)

Input SeaWave filter:
1.st order 6dB/octave / 10 Hz filter is 2.st order 12dB/octave

Liniar input amplifier:
offering extra gain 10Hz to 1MHz

Hydrophone Output signal:
Representing input selection. Used for recordings.

Detector Output signal:
Same as the hydrophone signal but here led through an envelope detector for audible detection of sonar signals in the frequency range from 20 KHz to 700 KHz.
Used for recordings.

Left and Right Line Inputs:
For external AUX connection to the output power amplifiers.
Used for playback to the loudspeakers.

Source selector:
For switching between internal and external signal sources.
The output from this point is led on to the Line output terminals for recordings and to the output level controls and thus to the power amplifier section.

Warning : It is not a valid situation to select a receiver hydrophone placed in the same media as the underwater loudspeaker and link these two together through the amplifier. This will cause oscillation at a very high frequency. Be careful with that.

Output Level Left and Right:
Used for controlling the output level for the output power amplifiers.

Left and Right Line Outputs:
Representing whatever is selected on the input terminals.
Used for recordings.

Output Selector:
Switches between normal two channel Stereo power output and the Bridge configuration. The OFF position mutes the output but it does not switch off the power to the amplifier.
Use the On/Off switch for that.

Power output terminals - Left and Right channels:
Used for the connection of an underwater loudspeaker with a nominel load Impedance of 100 ohm or max. 10nF
These outputs may also be used for driving a set of conventional 4 or 8 ohm loud-speakers for listening and for public presentation.

The output signal level is +/- 24Volt peak in the STEREO position OR +/- 48Volt peak in the BRIDGE position.
When in the BRIDGE configuration the load must be connected between the two RED terminals left and right thus forming a balanced floating output.

Cable screen may be connected to any of the black terminals which are coupled to reference and chassis which is the center of the batteries 0Volt.

Caution : Remember that the BNC connector is active also on the outer part when driven in Bridge mode. The BNC connector must under no circumstances be connected to ground when in Bridge mode. This will shortcircuit the right channel power output.
When the hydrophones are connected in stereo mode there is not this caution.
Then the BNC connectors are both grounded.

Amplifier Current consumption is appr. 0.1Amp stand by when switched ON but without signal through. The signal itself will increase the current consumption especially when driven continously and at high frequency.
Caution : Be carefull to monitor what you do especially when emitting signals that you cannot hear with you own ears. Some other creature might hear it Loud and clear.

The overall Power bandwidth is 10Hz to 300KHz.

ON/OFF switch on the right side of the box
REMEMBER to switch off when not in use to preserve battery opration time.

In Bridge position the Right output is inverted.
In Stereo position the outputs are in phase.
The power outputs may also drive a set of conventional loudspeakers at 4 or 8 ohm.
